The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
