The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
