Donald Trump's Regime of Punishment and Favor

The ex-president's voracious urge for payback has rapidly transformed into a organized system. Over the past year, the leader's fury and caprices have assumed the form of government actions similar to comparable to past authoritarian systems. Federal personnel who do not cooperate are immediately removed and replaced by supporters. Opposing leaders who challenge him risk indictment, trial and penalties. Adversaries have been labeled under administration directives as “unpatriotic”, “opposed to religious values” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with criminal charges as “security threats”.

Federal Agencies Remade

Each instance involving prosecution of critics and protection for supporters demonstrates its own unique features. Yet, despite their individual form, they embody expressions of what has developed as a deliberate method. Such events are far from coincidental. Trump's purge of Department of Justice prosecutors and FBI agents, accompanied by his placement of loyalists in senior roles, commenced quickly, quickly assumed a pattern, and has now been formed into a regime. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been restructured into political bodies under Trump's clear direction to execute his demands. Injustice has been made normal. It constitutes the apparatus of revenge.

Leadership is more concerned with targeting the chief's supposed enemies than they are with protecting our country's safety.

Inside the Structure

The foundation of this framework has been exposed in the legal complaint of multiple previous high-ranking FBI officials lodged in September in the federal court in Washington against top official an administration figure and top lawyer another official for unlawful firing in “a campaign of payback against them for what the accused considered to be a refusal to exhibit proper devotion”. According to the filing that a former acting director, the ex- interim leader, describes a conversation in which he “freely confessed the impropriety of his behavior”.

The official had sought to protect agency personnel from being dismissed, the lawsuit claims. He informed him that “administration officials” – interpreted by the official to be the presidential administration and federal prosecutors – had directed him to remove anyone who they considered as having been involved in a law enforcement case against the president. The filing goes on: “The director explained that he had to fire the individuals his leaders told him to dismiss, because his ability to retain his own role relied on the removal of the personnel who worked on investigations involving the chief executive. Patel commented that there was nothing he or him could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the bureau attempted to put the President in prison and he recalls it clearly.’” After Driscoll informed the director he was breaking the bureau's own policies, the director reportedly said “he knew that and he was aware the nature of the summary firings were probably unlawful”.

Broad Impact

After his reported acknowledgment to him, the justice department and the FBI have been gutted and redirected for his system of punishment. Several of the agency's top officials were dismissed or forced out in the first days of the government. Roughly 4,500 legal professionals at the justice department have taken a “early exit scheme”. A minimum of seven government attorneys, among them those in the southern district of New York, quit in objection over what they viewed as ideological pressure in withdrawing the legal action against the New York City mayor, the mayor, in as a trade for his assistance with his ICE arrests of migrants. The public integrity section of the department, which oversees ethical violations, has been reduced to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been severely reduced: seventy percent of its personnel has left. A third of senior leaders at the department have resigned. The unit enforcing ecological regulations has lost half its supervisors.

Favors and Penalties

In the legal matter, the interim prosecutor for the southern district of New York, the official, quit in protest against what she characterized as the “exchange”. Tom Homan, the president's “border czar,” showed up as the agent with Adams on television to announce: “Should he fail to deliver, I will return in New York City.”. Additionally, Emil Bove, previously the senior DoJ official and a former Trump attorney, who arranged the agreement, was awarded an appellate federal judgeship, a potential springboard to the highest court.

The president's exemption for wrongdoings perpetrated while in office, granted by the unprecedented decision of the conservative on the judicial body, thus thwarting his legal action over the Capitol riot and preserving his public standing for the national vote, is the cornerstone on which he stands to shield his supporters. Under these circumstances, he has been freed to authorize wrongdoing. The effect of the judicial ruling saturates his administration and the GOP thoroughly. The legal case has spread. As the former president's legal adviser he remarked about the Watergate
