Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
